Edmonson, Superintendent News Release – March 15, 2011 Fatality Crash in DeSoto Parish Claims One Life DeSoto – On March 15, 2011, at 6:42 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a two vehicle crash on Mill Entry Road on the private property of International Paper Company, located in DeSoto Parish. The crash claimed the life of a 22-year-old man from Natchitoches. According to investigating troopers, 22-year-old Brent M. Welch of Natchitoches was operating a 2001 GMC pickup when he turned off of LA 509 on to Mill Entry Road and began traveling south. Thereafter, Welch’s vehicle approached a 1998 Freightliner log truck that was stopped on the access road to the mill. For unknown reason, Welch’s vehicle collided with the rear portion of the trailer resulting in life threatening injuries. The log truck was being operated by 56-year-old Robert W. Spencer of Mansfield and was loaded with logs at the time of the collision. Welch was airlifted to LSU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by Dr. William Liles MD. Spencer was not injured as a result of the crash. Although impairment is not suspected to be a factor, routine toxicology tests are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
