Serious Injury Crash Sends Family of Four to Hospital

Grand Cane – On March 1, 2011, at 4:56 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a two vehicle crash on US 84 at the intersection of Radio Station Road in DeSoto Parish. The crash critically injured a 29-year-old mother from Grand Cane and left her three children with serious injuries.

According to investigating troopers, a 1999 Freightliner log truck, operated by 57-year-old Charlie Charlston Jr. of Grand Cane, was stopped east on US 84 waiting to make a left turn onto Radio Station Road.

Mary L. Williams (29-year-old form Grand Cane), her 9-year-old daughter, and 8-year-old twins (boy and girl), were traveling east on US 84 in a 2001 Buick Century when she suddenly noticed traffic stopped in front of her. Williams attempted stop and steered right to avoid a rear end collision. However, during that attempt, Williams lost control of the vehicle as it spun around and struck the right rear portion of the trucks trailer, which was loaded with logs.

Williams and her three children were not restrained at the time of the crash. Williams and her 9-year-old daughter were both air lifted to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport with life threatening injuries. The 8-year-old twins were transported to LSUMC by DeSoto EMS with serious injuries.

Charlston was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was not injured.

Although impairment is not suspected to be a factor, routine toxicology tests are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
