Edmonson, Superintendent News Release – February 14, 2011 Mother and Daughter Jailed for Insurance Fraud Shreveport – On Monday, February 14, 2011, troopers with the Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud/Auto Theft Unit in Shreveport arrested a mother and daughter from Shreveport and charged them each with one count of insurance fraud. The arrest was the result of an investigation into an alleged fraudulent insurance claim referred to the Louisiana Department of Insurance. On March 23, 2010, Mary J. Nelson (B/F; age 52) and her daughter Josette L. Nelson (B/F; age 29) reported that their 1996 Pontiac Bonneville and 1999 GMC Sierra truck, both of which were registered to Mary Nelson, sustained hail damage during a recent storm. The claim was filed with their automobile insurer seeking compensation for damages. The Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud/Auto Theft Unit is responsible for investigating referrals of suspected fraudulent insurance acts, such as fraudulent property / injury, staged crashes, “jump-in” crashes, along with staged slip and fall accidents and criminal acts involving stolen vehicles. The LSP Insurance Fraud / Auto Theft Unit is a branch of the State Police Criminal Investigation Division and works closely with the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), LA Department of Insurance, and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office in successfully bringing individuals involved in committing insurance fraud and auto theft related crimes to justice.
