Sanitation Worker Killed in EBR Parish Crash

Baton Rouge – Shortly before 6:00 am on July 29, 2019, Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 73 (Jefferson Hwy.) near Castle Ridge Ave. in E. Baton Rouge Parish. The crash claimed the life of 40-year-old Ricky Mitchell of Baton Rouge.

The initial investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2017 Freightliner garbage truck was stopped in the southbound lane of LA Hwy 73. Mitchell, an employee for a local trash collecting company, was standing behind the truck. At the same time, 62-year-old Vincent Dipuma of Baton Rouge was traveling southbound on LA Hwy 73 in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevrolet struck Mitchell and the rear of the Freightliner.

Mitchell sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. Dipuma was properly restrained, but sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Impairment is unknown at this time, but toxicology samples will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation and charges may be pending. There is no further information at this time.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, always ensure every occupant is properly restrained, and follow all traffic laws. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
