Unrestrained 15-Year-Old Injured in Single Vehicle Crash

Webster Parish - On the morning of December 1, 2010, at 9:13 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a single vehicle crash on Boothville Road at its intersection with Pie Brown Road in Webster Parish. The crash seriously injured a 15-year-old teenager from Doyline, LA.

According to investigating troopers, 17-year-old Ashley Sanford along with her passenger, 15-year-old Amy Gallegos, both from Doyline, were traveling west on Boothville Road in a 2000 Saturn SL passenger car. Sanford, while operating the vehicle at a high rate of speed, became distracted when she looked down to adjust the fit of her seat belt. As a result, Sanford lost control of the vehicle as it spun around and veered off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle came to rest in the grassy ditch area after colliding with a large Oak tree.

Sanford was restrained at the time of the crash and received only minor injuries. She was treated and released at the scene by the Webster Parish Fire Department.

Gallegos, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, was airlifted by Pafford Air to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, LA with serious injuries.

Speed and driver distraction are suspected to be factors in this crash.

Sanford was ticketed for careless operation due to the manner in which she operated the vehicle prior to the crash. She was also ticketed for failure to wear a seat belt due to her unbuckled passenger.

While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury.

Buckle UP!! Seat Belts Save Lives.
