Impaired Driver Jailed in One Vehicle Fatal Crash in DeSoto Parish
DeSoto Parish – On November 20, 2010, at 2:33 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a one vehicle crash on LA 5, 3.5 miles south of LA 789, in DeSoto Parish. The crash claimed the life of a 31-year-old man and injured a 24-year-old female, both from Joaquin, TX. According to investigating troopers, 24-year-old Kelly Boyett and her spouse/passenger, 31-year-old Jackie C. Boyett Jr., were both traveling west on LA 5 in a 2011 Nissan 4-door passenger car, when Kelly Boyett allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. Consequently, the vehicle crossed the center line and traveled off the left side of the roadway into a ditch area where it struck a small standing pine tree. After impact, the vehicle continued over a protruding stump which caused the gas tank to become ruptured and inflamed with fire. Kelly Boyett, who was buckled at the time of the crash, was pulled from the vehicle as it became engulfed in flames by local oil field workers who stopped. She refused medical aid at the scene as her injuries were minor in nature and not life threatening. Jackie Boyett, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, was consumed by the fire during his attempt to exit the vehicle. He was later pronounced deceased at the scene by the DeSoto Parish Coroner. The investigation revealed that Kelly Boyett was impaired at the time of the crash. Subsequently, she was placed under arrest and transported to the DeSoto Parish Jail where she was booked for Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated – 1st Offense, Careless Operation, and Vehicular Homicide. The crash remains under investigation. Troop G troopers have investigated 35 fatal crashes for the year of 2010, resulting in 39 fatalities. | |||
