New Year’s Weekend Crash
Claimed the Lives of Two People in Claiborne Parish

Claiborne Parish-On January 2, 2016, at 11:18 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a report of a one vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 3062, just west of US Highway 79 Bypass in Claiborne Parish that claimed the lives of two people.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by 24-year-old Max Waganer of Shongaloo was traveling east on LA 3062 when for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle exited the right side of the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree.

Waganer and his passenger 24-year-old Erin Guzy of Mesquite, TX were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash and died as a result of their injuries.

A toxicology sample was obtained from Waganer and will be submitted for analysis. Speed is suspected to be a factor in this crash and the use of alcohol is still under investigation.

Louisiana law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in every seating position, day and night. Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed as the result of a crash and is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves.

Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and to wear their seatbelt. This crash serves as yet another tragic reminder of how important this decision can be.
