TROOP G NEWS RELEASE December 23, 2015 ATV Crash Claims the Life of a Benton Man Bossier Parish-On December 23, 2015, at 8:19 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a report of an ATV crash on Louisiana Highway 162, just west of Louisiana Highway 157 that claimed the life of a Benton man. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1995 Palaris Magnum ATV driven by 67-year-old Cornelius McConnell of Benton was traveling east on LA 162 when for reasons still under investigation, the ATV exited the right side of the roadway and struck a DOTD curve warning sign. The ATV then overturned several times ejecting McConnell before it came to rest. McConnell was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and died as a result of his injuries. A toxicology sample was obtained from McConnell and will be submitted for analysis. Impairment is suspected to be a factor in this crash. This crash remains under investigation. Each year, on Louisiana’s highways, numerous people are killed or seriously injured in crashes that involve impaired drivers. In 2014, 47% of the fatal crashes in Troop G involved impaired drivers. This crash could have been prevented. Motorists are asked to designate a sober driver before traveling to any place where alcohol will be consumed and also refrain from operating any ATVs or UTVs after consuming alcoholic beverages. By taking the alcohol element out of the equation, you can significantly reduce your chances of having a crash or causing one. Contact Information: | |||
