TROOP G NEWS RELEASE May 18, 2015
False Insurance Claim Lands Shreveport Woman in Jail Shreveport – Following an investigation into a complaint of insurance fraud, Troopers with the Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud / Auto Theft Unit arrested 37-year-old Lawaneka Lee of Shreveport for Insurance Fraud and Filing False Public Records.
On May 6, 2013, the Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud / Auto Theft Unit in Shreveport received a complaint filed with the Louisiana Department of Insurance by the United Services Automobile Association (USAA) Special Investigations Unit. The referral alleged that Lee filed a fraudulent insurance claim against her USAA renter’s policy following an alleged theft of a diamond anniversary ring from her Shreveport residence in February of 2013.
The investigation revealed that Lee reported the theft of a 21 stone diamond anniversary band from her residence on February 14, 2013. Prior to the latest claim, two additional claims were made by Lee involving this same piece of jewelry. USAA paid Lee approximately $3,000.00 for these previous claims for theft as well as damage to the ring.
On May 18, 2015, Troopers arrested Lee for Insurance Fraud and Filing False Public Records. If convicted, Lee could face up to 6 years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines plus restitution.
Insurance Fraud is a serious crime and will not be taken lightly. Troopers will continue to partner with local Law Enforcement to proactively seek out these offenders and bring them to justice.
