TROOP G NEWS RELEASE June 29, 2016 Pedestrian Killed in Webster Parish Crash Cullen, LA—A Sarepta man died last night after he was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking on US Highway 371. Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday June 29, 2016, Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a fatality crash on US Highway 371 approximately 1 mile south Louisiana Highway 802 that involved a pedestrian. The initial investigation revealed 57-year-old Brenda Smith of Sarepta, LA was driving a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer south on US 371 when the vehicle struck 67-year-old Tommy Helms of Sarepta, LA who was walking in the southbound lane of travel. After being struck by the Mountaineer, Helms was thrown into the northbound lane and struck by a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 66-year-old Barbara Mills of Springhill, LA. Helms was pronounced dead at the scene by the Webster Parish Coroner’s Office. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
