TROOP F - NEWS RELEASE

August 14, 2011
Kids “Gearing Up” for School, Motorist Need to “Gear Down” for Kids

Summer vacation has come to an end and the 2011-2012 school year is beginning in many of our areas. The Louisiana State Police want to remind motorists to drive with care and be especially aware of school zone speed limits, school busses loading or unloading children, and children walking or biking to school. Troopers will be patrolling school zones and speeding will not be tolerated while the school zone speed limits are in effect. Most school zones have a reduced speed limit in effect from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm; however there are some zones that are marked with slightly different times. It is the responsibility of the motorist to be aware of these speed zones and to reduce their speed accordingly.

In addition to the speed zones, the motoring public needs to be on the lookout for school busses that are loading or unloading children. If a school bus is stopped for this purpose and has its stop signs and red lights on, motorists must stop not less than thirty feet from the bus and wait for the lights to be turned off before proceeding. Never pass a school bus which is stopped to pick-up or drop-off a child. A school bus driver can report any violation of this law. The fines for this violation can be substantial and your driver's license may be suspended.

Motorists traveling the roadways during peak school traffic periods should expect traffic congestion and possible delays near school zones. It is important for each driver to be patient with the increased traffic and allow extra time to arrive safely at their destination.

Captain Kevin Reeves, the Troop F Commander, said “motorists need to avoid becoming complacent in these school zones as they once again become active with the onset of the school year. Troopers will be aggressively patrolling school zones and the surrounding areas. Our children deserve to be safe and we will do our part to ensure their safety while traveling to or from school.”
