Sobriety Checkpoint Scheduled

Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop F and officers from the West Monroe Police Department, the ULM Police Department and the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office will conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint in West Monroe, Saturday, February 11, 2012 from approximately 9:00 PM to 3:00 AM. Troopers, deputies, and officers will be working together in an effort to keep impaired drivers off our roadways and ensure everyone’s safety.

Every year on the roadways across the state, thousands of people are killed and seriously injured because of impaired drivers. The consequences of drinking and driving can be costly no matter how many drinks you have consumed. In 2010, 43% of fatal crashes in Louisiana involved alcohol. Sobriety checkpoints are effective enforcement tools because they serve as a deterrent to impaired driving. The task of stopping impaired drivers is a joint effort of law enforcement agencies and the public. By never allowing an impaired driver to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and reporting dangerous drivers to law enforcement, the public can play an important role in the reduction of crashes caused by impaired drivers. Making poor decisions in a vehicle such as driving impaired, driving while distracted and/or not wearing a seat belt leads to serious injuries and deaths every day across the state. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death. To report dangerous drivers or hazardous roadway conditions, call *LSP (*577) from your cell phone or your local police department.
