TROOP F - NEWS RELEASE February 1, 2012 Man Dies After Crashing Log Truck in Union Parish An Arkansas man has died in a single-vehicle crash in Union Parish. Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers responded to the crash this morning at about 9:05 am. The investigation revealed that a 1997 Mack log truck was loaded and traveling north on LA 549 (mile post 3.5) in Union Parish when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway. The truck then struck several small trees before overturning and coming to rest in a creek. The driver, identified as 53-year-old Cleotha Avery from Strong, AR, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Union Parish Coroner's Office. It is unknown if Avery was wearing his seat belt and impairment is not suspected in the crash. Troopers investigating the crash observed that the damage to the vehicle is not consistent with what is normally observed in fatal crashes. The Union Parish Coroner's Office has ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. While not all crashes are survivable, the proper wearing of a seat belt is the best way to reduce injuries and fatalities in car crashes.
