TROOP F - NEWS RELEASE February 4, 2012 Heavy Rains Present Driving Hazards in the Area With heavy rain saturating the area, motorists need to be extra careful when hitting the roads. The Louisiana State Police would like to take this moment to remind motorists to take their time and be patient when traveling during inclement weather periods. Many streets in the area have flooded or have standing water on them. Motorists should never drive through standing water, because it is often difficult to determine the depth of the water or if the water is moving across the roadway. It takes only a few inches of moving water to sweep a car off the roadway or cause an engine to stall. Travel should be avoided during periods of heavy rain, but if it becomes necessary, make sure to allow extra time to safely arrive at your destination. Motorists must sometimes slow down well below the posted speed limits when roadways are wet. If you feel like you are “hydroplaning”, you are driving too fast. Always allow a greater following distance when driving on wet roads. It is also important to make sure your vehicle is in good operating condition with good tires, headlamps, and windshield wipers. Remember to turn your headlights on when your windshield wipers are in operation. Always wear your seat belt and insist that all passengers are properly restrained. You can report emergencies or hazardous road conditions to your local police department or the Louisiana State Police by dialing *LSP (*577) from you cellular phone.
