TROOP F - NEWS RELEASE

December 16, 2011
Impairment Suspected in Pedestrian Fatal Crash

A Winnsboro man has died after being struck by a vehicle in Franklin Parish.

Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers responded to a pedestrian crash in Franklin Parish on LA 562, about 5.9 miles east of US 425, last night at about 10:00 pm. The investigation revealed that a 2002 Toyota car was traveling west on LA 562 when it struck a pedestrian that was lying in the roadway. The crash was located in a rural area with no street lights and the driver of the Toyota was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian.

The pedestrian, identified as 22-year-old Justin Alford from Winnsboro, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Franklin Parish Coroner's Office. Troopers suspect that Alford was impaired at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as 38-year-old Tabitha Odom from Wisner, was not injured in the crash.

No citations were issued and this incident remains under investigation.

While the exact cause of this crash remains under investigation, the Louisiana State Police would like to remind those who choose to drink to make responsible decisions. Impairment can often lead to poor choices, whether it is behind the wheel of a car or while walking on a highway. If you are going to attend any celebrations or holiday get-togethers, make prior arrangements for a sober driver or a place to stay the night to ensure you make it home safe.
