TROOP F - NEWS RELEASE

November 24, 2011
Arkansas Woman Dies in Madison Parish Crash

A Pine Bluff, Arkansas woman has died in a single vehicle crash in Madison Parish.

Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers responded to the crash this morning at about 8:25 am. The investigation revealed that a 2002 Mercury Marquis was traveling south on US Hwy 65, just north of Tallulah, when the driver attempted to pass another southbound vehicle. Upon beginning to pass, the driver noticed a northbound vehicle approaching from the opposing lane. The driver of the Mercury attempted to re-enter the southbound lane of travel, but over-corrected and ran off the right side of the roadway. The Mercury continued through a guardrail and a steep ditch before coming to rest in a field.

The right rear passenger, identified as Ida Jones (67 yoa from Pine Bluff, AR), suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison Parish Coroner's Office. The driver, identified as Eddie Goodlow (75 yoa from Pine Bluff, AR), and the front right seat passenger, identified as Shederick Ringo (59 yoa from Pine Bluff, AR), were transported to River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg with moderate injuries.

Goodlow was wearing his seat belt. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending. Goodlow was issued a citation for careless operation.

The deceased passenger, Ida Jones, was reportedly wearing her seat belt improperly by having placed the shoulder belt portion beneath her arm.

The proper wearing of a seat belt is the best way to reduce injuries and fatalities in car crashes. Louisiana law requires that all occupants, regardless of seating position, have a seat belt "properly fastened around his or her body at all times". To provide optimal protection for any rider, the lap portion of a lap/shoulder belt must be worn low and snug across the hips, and the shoulder portion must be snug across the chest, away from the neck and face. The shoulder portion should NEVER be worn behind the back or under the arm.

In 2011, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated forty-five (45) fatal crashes resulting in fifty-two (52) deaths.
