Sobriety Checkpoint Scheduled for Friday Night

To combat impaired driving in our area, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers will team up with other law enforcement agencies to conduct a sobriety checkpoint this weekend.

On Friday, January 28, 2011, a sobriety checkpoint will be conducted in the West Monroe city limits from approximately 9:00 pm to 3:00 am. Troop F Troopers will partner with officers from the West Monroe and Monroe Police Departments to enforce and deter impaired driving offenses.

Checkpoints are designed to remove impaired drivers from the roads before they can injure themselves or others, but to also act as a deterrent to impaired driving. If people recognize the increased probability of checkpoints, they are less likely to drive impaired.

There are no excuses for impaired driving and those who choose to endanger themselves or others will be arrested.

· Before attending any celebration, plan a safe way home
· Before drinking, designate a sober driver and give that person your keys
· If you are impaired, call a taxi, sober friend or family member.
· If you see a suspected drunk driver, contact your local police or sheriff’s department, or call the Louisiana State Police hotline: *LSP (*577)

Officers will also monitor drivers and passengers for seat belt use. Anyone caught not wearing a seat belt or properly restraining children will be ticketed.
