Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a time of fun and enjoyment as we watch our children take a break from their busy lives (i.e. school and sports) and just be “children” for a few hours. However, it is the responsibility of parents and all law enforcement to assure that Halloween activities are enjoyable and free from mishaps and tragedies.

The Department of Public Safety and Corrections is actively engaged in keeping children safe during Halloween. Sex offenders are not allowed to participate in any Halloween activities. All supervised sex offenders who are not working Halloween night must be at home with all outside lighting turned off. They are not allowed to open their doors to trick-or-treaters.

Prior to Halloween activities parents can visit our web site ( www.lsp.org ) to search for registered sex offenders in their area. If a sex offender is participating in Halloween activities parents/citizens are urged to contact their local law enforcement agency or the state police.

Additional safety guidelines are as follows:
1. Children should wear some type of reflective clothing.
2. Flashlights or “glow sticks” should be utilized for safety.
3. Only trick-or-treat with a group! Never trick-or-treat by yourself!
4. Parents should supervise all children.
5. Parents should perform a visual check of all candy prior to allowing their children to consume it.

Louisiana State Police Troop F wants to remind all drivers the importance of safety this weekend as children are out trick-or-treating. Drivers traveling on Louisiana roadways should remember that some communities will be holding Halloween activities all weekend. If you are in an area where children are present, please remember to make the safe decision and reduce your speed if it is necessary.

Troopers will be looking for motorists who are under the influence of alcohol or narcotics throughout the weekend. If you are planning to drink, make sure you designate a driver.
