Fatal Motorcycle Crash in Richland Parish

A Columbia man has died in a motorcycle crash in Richland Parish.

Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers responded to the crash this morning at about 6:08 am. The investigation revealed that a 2000 Harley Davidson was traveling south on LA 561 when, for unknown reasons, the motorcycle drifted to the right and struck part of a bridge guardrail. The driver was ejected from the motorcycle upon impact.

The driver, identified as 47-year-old Kenny McKnight from Columbia was pronounced dead at the scene by the Richland Parish Coroner's Office. McKnight was not wearing a motorcycle helmet at the time of the crash. Impairment is not suspected, but routine toxicology tests are pending.

Louisiana Law requires that all motorcycle operators and occupants wear a DOT approved helmet. Motorcycle helmets save lives. To help protect the lives of motorcycle riders and occupants, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that all motorcycle helmets sold in the United States meet specific Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standards. This standard defines minimum levels of performance that helmets must meet to protect the head and brain in the event of a crash. Motorcycle riders can find more information on helmet guidelines and rider safety courses by visiting http://lahighwaysafety.org/motorcycle.html.

In 2011, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated sixteen (16) fatal crashes resulting in seventeen (17) deaths.
