News Release May 12, 2011 Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by a Vehicle in Lincoln Parish
A Winnsboro man has died after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 20 in Lincoln Parish.
Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers responded to the crash this morning at about 7:10 am. The investigation revealed that a 2011 Hyundai car was traveling east on I-20, near milepost 90.5, when it crossed the yellow lane line and struck a pedestrian that was standing on the paved portion of the roadway between the grass median and the lane marking. The pedestrian came to rest in the median and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lincoln parish Coroner's Office.
The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 65-year-old Joseph Watkins from Chicago, IL, was not injured in the crash. Watkins was issued a citation for Careless Operation.
The pedestrian, identified as 31-year-old Jeremy Walker from Winnsboro, was part of a contracted work crew picking up trash in the median at the time of the crash. He was wearing the required safety gear when he was struck.
The crash is still under investigation at this time.
In 2011, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated twelve (12) fatal crashes resulting in thirteen (13) deaths.
