TROOP F NEWS RELEASE
May 12, 2013
Serious Injury Crash In Jackson Parish

On May 11, 2013, at 8:11 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two vehicle serious injury crash on Louisiana Highway 4 west of U.S. Highway 167.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2005 Honda motorcycle driven by 25-year-old Shontavious Foster of Chatham was traveling east on Louisiana Highway 4 at a high rate of speed and without its headlight on. The Honda passed an eastbound vehicle and then struck a 2002 Ford F-150 driven by 56-year-old Kenneth Guyotte of Jonesboro that was turning left into a driveway.

Foster suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to a hospital in Shreveport. Troopers were unable to determine if Foster was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Guyotte was wearing his seatbelt and did not report any injuries.

Alcohol use is not suspected. The crash remains under investigation.

Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increase the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a dangerous situation. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive in a safe and prudent manner.

Louisiana law requires all motorists to turn on their headlights 1) at all times between sunset and sunrise; 2) when insufficient light or unfavorable conditions make persons and vehicles on the highways not clearly discernible at a distance of five hundred feet ahead; 3) when moisture in the air or precipitation necessitates the continuous use of windshield wipers; and 4) when driving in a tunnel.

May is motorcycle awareness month. Motorcycle awareness license plates are available through the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Please visit their website at www.expresslane.org for more information. Funds generated from the purchase of the plates will be used by the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign to increase awareness and promote/support training and education efforts for motorcyclists. Motorists should always pay close attention to other traffic and drive care.
