TROOP F NEWS RELEASE June 1, 2013 Fatal Crash in Lincoln Parish On May 31, 2013, at 5:36 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 20 about 12 miles west of Ruston. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2002 Nissan Maxima, driven by 34-year-old Heather Berry of Ruston, was traveling east on Interstate 20 when the Nissan ran off the left side of the road. The Nissan traveled back onto the road and then off the right side of the road where it struck a tree. Berry was not wearing her seatbelt. Berry suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital in Shreveport where she died. Alcohol use is not suspected. A toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. The nationwide Click It or Ticket occupant protection enforcement campaign is currently underway through June 2. Overtime hours have been allocated to the Louisiana State Police and other law enforcement agencies across the nation to provide additional enforcement of seatbelt and child restraint laws. Louisiana state law requires vehicle occupants in all seating positions to be properly restrained, day and night. Now more than ever, “Click It or Ticket.” Inattentive and distracted driving are leading causes of crashes in our state. Distracted driving is unsafe, irresponsible and in a split second its consequences can be devastating. More information on distracted driving may be found online at www.distraction.gov. Troop F has investigated 16 fatal crashes which have resulted in 18 deaths so far this year. | |||
