NEWS RELEASE- Troop F February 4, 2013 Unrestrained Driver Killed in Ouachita Parish On February 3, 2013, at 8:40 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single vehicle crash on Interstate 20 west of Cheniere Drew Road. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Ford truck, driven by 45-year-old Joseph Williams of Monroe, was traveling east on Interstate 20 when it ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. Williams was not wearing his seat belt and was transported to Glenwood Regional Medical Center where he died. The passenger, 34-year-old Shira Steele of Monroe, was also not wearing her seat belt. Steele was partially ejected and was transported to a hospital in Shreveport with serious injuries. Alcohol use is unknown. A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. The majority of fatal and serious injury crashes involve occupants who are not wearing seatbelts. State Law requires seatbelts to be used at every seating position in the vehicle. Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of being properly restrained at all times. Troop F has investigated 5 fatal crashes which have resulted in 7 deaths so far this year. .
