The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, driven by 63-year-old Kenny Barrett of Marion, was traveling north on Louisiana Highway 143 when it struck a deer that was crossing the road. The Harley-Davidson then drove off the right side of the road and struck a tree. Barrett was wearing a DOT approved helmet and suffered fatal injuries. The passenger, 52-year-old Melinda Weeks of Marion, was wearing a helmet not approved by DOT and suffered fatal injuries. Barrett and Weeks were pronounced dead on scene by the Union Parish Coroner’s office. Alcohol use is not suspected. A toxicology sample was taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Motorcycle awareness license plates are available through the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Funds generated from the purchase of the plates will be used by the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign to increase awareness and promote/support training and education efforts for motorcyclists. Troop F has investigated 29 fatal crashes which have resulted in 32 deaths so far this year.
