Impaired Driver Causes Fatal Crash in Morehouse Parish
On August 15, 2013, at 2:55 a.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single vehicle fatal crash on U.S. Highway 425 north of Bastrop.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 23-year-old Derek Kilcrease of Hamburg, Arkansas, was traveling north on U.S Highway 425 when it ran off the right side of the road, drove back onto the road before running off the right side of the road a second time and overturned.

Kilcrease was not properly restrained and did not report any injuries. The rear seat passenger, 23-year-old Heather Aulds of Hamburg, Arkansas, was not properly restrained, suffered minor injuries but refused aid. The front seat passenger, 20-year-old Christopher Savage of Hamburg, Arkansas, was not properly restrained and was ejected. Savage suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Morehouse Parish Coroner’s Office.

Impairment is suspected. A toxicology sample was taken and submitted for analysis. Kilcrease was charged with vehicular homicide and simple criminal damage to property and was booked in the Morehouse Parish Jail. If convicted on both charges, Kilcrease faces up to a $16,000 fine and up to 30 years in prison. The crash remains under investigation.

Wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves from injury in the event of a crash. Louisiana state law requires vehicle occupants in all seating positions to be properly restrained, day and night. Buckle up Louisiana. Every trip. Every time.

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission is coordinating a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign that will start today, Friday August 16 and continue until Monday September 2. Law enforcement efforts to crack down on impaired driving will be increased during the entire campaign period. Many people are seriously injured or killed each year due to impaired driving. It is important to never get behind the wheel if you are impaired or get in a vehicle with a driver who is impaired. Report impaired drivers by dialing *LSP (*577) from your cellular phone to reach the nearest Louisiana State Police troop location or dial 911 to contact local law enforcement.

Troop F has investigated 32 fatal crashes which have resulted in 35 deaths so far this year
