The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2000 Chevrolet truck, driven by 22-year-old Jason Hensley of Lake Providence, was traveling east on Louisiana Highway 134 when it struck the side of a Union Pacific freight train that was traveling south. The Chevrolet was pulling a trailer loaded with a 1999 Mercury Tracer. The Chevrolet struck the train on the 100 and 101 tanker cars. Hensley suffered fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner’s office. The passenger, 27-year-old Brandon Hensley of Lake Providence, was transported to St. Francis Medical Center with minor injuries. Alcohol use is not suspected. A toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. The crash occurred at a crossing with active warning devices (flashing lights, gates, and bells). Louisiana law requires every solid rubber tire on a vehicle moved on any highway of this state shall have rubber on its entire traction surface at least one inch thick above the edge of the flange of the entire periphery of the rim of the wheel. Troopers encourage motorists to reduce their speed even more in hazardous weather. Rain and other adverse weather conditions make it harder to negotiate curves and other situations. Troop F has investigated 23 fatal crashes which have resulted in 25 deaths so far this year.
