TROOP A NEWS RELEASE June 17, 2018 Unrestrained Driver Killed in Livingston Parish Crash Livingston Parish – Shortly after 9:00 am on June 17, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle crash that resulted in a fatality on LA Hwy 449 north of LA Hwy 63 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 27-year-old Hannah C. Watts of Walker. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Watts was driving a 2004 Toyota Corolla southbound on LA Hwy 449. At the same time, 71-year-old Mike Small of Walker was driving a 2017 GMC pickup truck northbound on LA Hwy 449. For unknown reasons as Watts entered a curve her Toyota crossed the centerline into the northbound lane of travel. As a result the Toyota struck the GMC. After impact the Toyota left the roadway and struck a tree. Watts was unrestrained at the time of the crash and sustained fatal injuries as a result. Small was properly restrained and suffered only minor injuries. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash for either driver, but a toxicology sample was taken from Watts to be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
