Fatal crash in Ouachita Parish

On June 26, 2012, at 8:29 a.m., troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 557 about 2 miles south of Louisiana Highway 34 in Ouachita Parish that killed a man from Columbia, Louisiana.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 GMC Canyon driven by 27-year-old Dustin Trey Hollis of Columbia was traveling north on LA 557 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle Hollis was driving crossed the center line and struck the side and then the rear tractor axle of a southbound 18-wheeler driven by 39-year-old Brian Costin of Eros, La. Costin steered to the right in an attempt to avoid the crash but was unable to.

Hollis (the driver of the pickup truck) was pronounced dead at the scene. Costin (the driver of the 18-wheeler) was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

While the cause of this crash has not yet been determined, inattentive and distracted driving is a leading cause of crashes in our state. More information on distracted driving may be found online at www.distraction.gov.
