Traffic Stop Yields Significant Marijuana Seizure

A Ouachita Parish traffic stop by Louisiana State Police resulted in the seizure of a significant amount of marijuana today.

At approximately 12:50 pm this afternoon, a Louisiana State Police Trooper conducted a traffic stop on an eastbound 2005 Ford pick-up truck following a traffic violation on I-20 milepost 107. The driver, 24 year-old Carlos Alarcon of El Paso, Texas, indicated they were traveling from Odessa, Texas to Birmingham, Alabama but acted in a nervous manner while he spoke to the trooper. As a result, the trooper requested consent to search the vehicle, to which Mr. Alarcon voluntarily allowed. During the search, troopers noted discrepancies on the undercarriage of the truck and on a combination tool box/auxiliary fuel tank. Further investigation revealed a metal box, located within the auxiliary fuel tank, which contained 314 pounds of marijuana.

The driver was subsequently arrested for Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, Conspiracy to Distribute Marijuana and Improper Lane Usage.

The passenger, 25 year-old Jose Solis of Odessa, Texas, was also arrested for Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute and Conspiracy to Distribute Marijuana.

Both were transported and booked into the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center.
The estimated street value of the seized marijuana is $314,000.
