TROOP F - NEWS RELEASE September 04, 2012 Fatal crash in West Carroll Parish On September 03, 2012, shortly after 6:20 p.m., troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 588 at McLemore Road that claimed the life of a woman from Pioneer, Louisiana. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1995 Buick Lesabre driven by 63-year-old Maria B. Jones of Pioneer was traveling west on Louisiana Highway 588 when she attempted to make a left turn into a private drive and was struck by a 1995 Kenworth Tractor 18-wheeler driven by 52-year-old George Eckles of Bastrop that was traveling east on Louisiana Highway 588. Jones suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at West Carroll Memorial Hospital. Jones was not wearing a seatbelt. Eckles, who was wearing a seatbelt, did not report any injuries from the crash. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. The majority of fatal and serious injury crashes involve occupants who are not wearing seatbelts. State law requires seatbelts to be used at every seating position in the vehicle. Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of being properly restrained at all times. Troop F has investigated 16 fatal crashes which have resulted in 19 deaths so far this year.
