LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE News Release August 16, 2008
School Zone Safety
Summer vacation is coming to an end and the 2008-2009 school year is beginning in our area. The Louisiana State Police wants to remind motorists to drive with care and be especially aware of school zone speed limits, school busses loading or unloading children, and children walking or biking to school. Troopers will be patrolling school zones and speeding will not be tolerated while the school zone speed limits are in effect. Most school zones have a reduced speed limit in effect from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm; however there are some zones that are marked with slightly different times. It is the responsibility of the motorist to be aware of these speed zones and to reduce their speed accordingly. In addition to the speed zones, the motoring public needs to be on the look out for school busses that are loading or unloading children. If a school bus is stopped for this purpose and has its stop signs and red lights on, motorists must stop not less than thirty feet from the bus and wait for the lights to be turned off before proceeding. Never pass a school bus which is stopped to pick-up of drop-off a child. A school bus driver can report any violation of this law and the fines are not cheap and come with a suspension of your driver's license.
