Impaired Driver Kills Pedestrian in Morehouse Parish |

News Release February 9, 2009 Impaired Driver Kills Pedestrian in Morehouse Parish A pedestrian died Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle in Morehouse Parish.
The crash occurred on US Hwy 165 on February 8, 2009 at about 10:28 pm. A 2006 Jeep Cherokee was traveling north on US 165 at about milepost 208, north of Bastrop, when it drove onto the shoulder and struck two pedestrians. The Jeep then continued north without stopping. A Morehouse Parish Deputy located and stopped the vehicle just south of Bonita, which is about 10 miles from the crash location. Evidence at the scene connected the vehicle to the crash.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 43 year old Craig A. Oliphant from Bastrop, was arrested by investigating troopers after they determined that he was impaired. Oliphant was transported to the Morehouse Parish Detention Center where he was booked for Vehicular Homicide and Hit and Run.
The pedestrians struck by Oliphant have been identified as 36 year old Carvis Scott and 33 year old Fredrick Matthews, both from Bastrop. Carvis Scott died at the scene as a result of the injuries he sustained after being hit by the Jeep. Matthews was not seriously injured in the crash.
