Injured Motorist Dies at Hospital

On March 7, 2008 at 3:17 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers investigated a two vehicle injury crash in Union parish. The crash occurred on LA 558 at milepost 4.1 near the Arkansas state line in northern Union parish. A 1995 Ford Escort being driven by Danny J. Hatten, a 34 year old West Monroe man, was traveling south on LA 558 when the driver became distracted and drifted into the northbound lane. Hatten then attempted to steer back to the south lane, but lost control of his vehicle after hitting some snow and ice on the center line of the road. The Ford began to rotate counter clockwise as it entered the northbound lane where it was struck on the passenger side by a 2007 Kenworth tractor/trailer.

Hatten had to be extricated from his vehicle, but was in stable condition as he was being transported to the hospital in El Dorado, Arkansas. The trooper investigating the crash was able to get a statement from Hatten at the hospital and cited him for Careless Operation and an insurance violation. The driver of the 2007 Freightliner, identified as 60 year old Ephriam Walker from Hampton, AR, was not injured in the crash and was not cited.

On March 8, 2008 Troop F was notified by the El Dorado Coroner's office that Danny Hatten had died from an unexpected complication at 10:18 am.

Hatten was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor.

In 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated twelve (12) fatal crashes resulting in thirteen (13) deaths.
