| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE News Release March 2, 2008 Unrestrained Driver Dies in Caldwell Crash On March 1, 2008 at 11:40 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers investigated a one vehicle crash which resulted in the death of a Columbia man. The crash occurred on LA Hwy 846 at mile post 18.3 in Caldwell Parish when a northbound 2003 Chevrolet pick-up ran off the left side of the roadway for unknown reasons. After leaving the roadway, the truck rolled several times and traveled for about 200 feet before coming to rest in a group of trees. The driver, identified as 43 year old Billy J. Wilkes Jr. from Columbia, was ejected from the vehicle in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Caldwell Parish Coroners office. Wilkes was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Wilkes was not wearing his seat belt and alcohol use is unknown at this time, although routine toxicology tests are pending. The Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists to buckle up when driving or riding in a vehicle. This simple step would save hundreds of lives each year in Louisiana. Buckle up every time you go for a ride. It's not only the law, but it will drastically improve your chances of not being injured or killed in a crash. In 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated nine (9) fatal crashes resulting in ten (10) deaths.
