| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE News Release January 19, 2008 Toddler Killed in Caldwell Parish Crash Around 6:30 pm on the evening of Friday, January 18, 2008, Louisiana State Police – Troop F investigated a single vehicle crash. This crash resulted in the death of one child and injuries to four other occupants. A 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling south on LA Hwy 846, milepost 14.2, when the driver lost control of the vehicle in the curve. The Cavalier ran off the roadway and overturned. An unrestrained three-year boy was ejected. The driver, thirty-year old Jessica Varnell, was wearing a seat belt and suffered only minor injuries. The ejected three-year old boy suffered life-threatening injuries and was later transported to LSU-S Medical Center. A two-year old boy, whose restraint-usage is currently under investigation, was pronounced dead at Citizen’s Medical Center in Columbia. Twenty-five year old Rachel Atchison was not wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries. An infant girl was appropriately restrained and suffered moderate injuries. All occupants are from Columbia. While routine toxicology tests are pending, impairment is not suspected and Varnell was cited for careless operation. In 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated five (5) fatal crashes resulting in five (5) deaths. For More Information, Contact: Sgt.
