Ouachita Parish Crash Kills One Man and Seriously Injures a Child

On February 2, 2008 at 2:05 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers investigated a three vehicle crash which resulted in the death of one occupant and serious injury to a juvenile passenger. The crash occurred on LA 34 near milepost 83.1 in Ouachita Parish. A 2000 Peterbuilt Log Truck was traveling north on LA 34 and was loaded with logs as the driver slowed to make a right turn into the Graphic Packaging paper mill. A 2001 Ford F-150 was also traveling north on LA 34 when the driver failed to stop for the turning log truck and struck the rear of the protruding logs. The driver of the Ford, identified as 27 year old Daniel R. Naron from West Monroe, continued north for two-tenths of a mile before stopping. One front seat occupant of the Ford, who has been identified as 24 year old Jonathan C. Acree from West Monroe, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner's Office. A 7 year old female was also sitting in the front seat of the Ford and she suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and is currently being treated at the LSU-Shreveport hospital. Acree was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and the juvenile was improperly restrained.
The driver of the 2000 Peterbuilt, identified as 44 year old Phillip R. Fitzgerald from Dodson, was not injured in the crash. A third vehicle, a 1993 Subaru car driven by 25 year old Tara Slaton from West Monroe, was struck by debris from the initial collision and received minor damage.
Alcohol was a factor in the crash and after being treated for minor injuries, Daniel Naron, was arrested and booked into the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center for Vehicular Homicide, Negligent Injuring, and Possession of Marijuana. Naron was given a breath test approximately four hours after the crash and had a blood alcohol content of .088g%. (In Louisiana, .08g% is presumed impaired)
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

**In 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated seven (7) fatal crashes resulting in eight (8) deaths.
