| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE News Release April 5, 2008 Wrecker Driver Killed While Working Crash Scene On April 4, 2008 at about 10:24 pm, a Louisiana State Police Troop F Trooper was working a minor crash on LA 34 at milepost 84.2 near Graphic Packaging in Ouachita Parish when a wrecker driver was struck and killed by another vehicle. Troopers and deputies from the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office were clearing the scene of a relatively minor crash when a wrecker driver from Warren's Wrecker Service was struck and killed by a passing log truck. The wrecker driver, identified as 42 year old Ronald Covington of West Monroe, was sweeping up debris from a previous crash when he was struck by a 2008 International log truck being driven by 56 year old Julius Greely of Monroe. Officers were directing traffic around the scene when the log truck approached and failed to stop despite officers directing him to do so. After the log truck struck Covington, it left the scene without stopping. The trooper and deputies began rendering aid to Covington and the log truck continued towards Monroe without being stopped. Covington was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner's office. An investigation identified Greely as the driver of the log truck and troopers learned that he had just dropped off a load of logs at the mill. Troopers went to Greely's Monroe address where they located him and the truck. When troopers interviewed Greely, they determined that he knew or should have known that he had struck Covington. Greely was arrested and transported to the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center where he was booked for Hit and Run, Negligent Homicide and Failure to Obey a Police Officers Signals. Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending. In 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated sixteen (16) fatal crashes resulting in seventeen (17) deaths.
