News Release October 14, 2010 West Carroll Parish Fatal Crash – Toddler Rescued
On October 14, 2010, at about 9:10 am, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers responded to a one-vehicle fatal crash on LA 134 in West Carroll Parish at the East Carroll Parish line.
The investigation of the crash revealed that the 1998 Ford Taurus was traveling east on LA 134 when, for unknown reasons, it ran off the right side of the road, struck two trees, vaulted and then flipped. The vehicle then traveled down a steep embankment before it overturned in Bayou Macon.
When Trooper Robert Patrick arrived on the scene and observed the partially submerged in Bayou Macon, he was told that there may be people inside the vehicle. Trooper Patrick and additional first responders entered the water and were able to, partially, pry a door open. Trooper Patrick observed the adult driver to be unresponsive, but then heard the cries of a small child. Trooper Patrick located a three-year-old child partially submerged in the rear of the vehicle. He was able to lift the child out of the water and into an air pocket while additional emergency personnel pried open the trunk and removed the child from the car.
Unfortunately, the adult driver, identified as Alecia Wilson (35 yoa from Monroe), died in the crash. Two other occupants in the vehicle, a twelve-year-old female and a six-year-old male, had escaped from the vehicle and were located in good condition on the bank of the bayou.
The children were all transported to the Delhi Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. The three-year old suffered moderate injuries, while the twelve-year-old and six-year-old suffered minor injuries. Ms. Wilson was wearing her seatbelt, but restraint usage by the children is unknown.
Emergency responders assisting in the rescue of the small child included: Epps Police Chief Roosevelt Porter, Pioneer Police Chief Jamie Wallis, West Carroll Ambulance EMT Jackie Gunter, and West Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Deputy, John Warner.
While impairment is not suspected, routine toxicology tests are pending.
In 2010, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated thirty-three (33) fatal crashes resulting in thirty-five (35) deaths.
