TROOP A NEWS RELEASE
April 8, 2018
Bicyclist Killed in Livingston Parish Hit & Run

Denham Springs – At approximately 10:00 pm on April 7, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a fatal crash involving a bicycle on LA 1025 east of LA 16 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 38 year old Chad Zimmerle of Denham Springs. The crash also resulted in the arrest of 56 year old Glenn Banta of Denham Springs.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Zimmerle was riding his bicycle westbound on LA 1025. At the same time, Banta was traveling westbound on LA 1025 in a 1994 Chevrolet Silverado. For reasons still under investigation, Banta struck Zimmerle from behind and fled the scene. Troopers located Banta and his vehicle and placed him under arrest for hit and run.

Zimmerle sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. Troopers located Banta and his vehicle at approximately 2:30 am and placed him under arrest. Banta was booked into the Livingston Parish Jail for Hit & Run and Driving Under Suspension. This crash remains under investigation and additional charges are pending.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind bicyclists to never assume that a motorist can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are key to preventing crashes. Louisiana law requires bicyclists to remain as close to the right of side of the roadway as possible and obey all traffic laws. Motorists should remain alert at all times and remember the three foot rule when passing bicycles. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
