| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release August 24, 2010 School Zone Safety Summer vacation has come to an end and the 2010-2011 school year has begun in our area. The Louisiana State Police wants to remind motorists to drive with care and be especially aware of school zone speed limits, school busses loading or unloading children, and children walking or biking to school. Troop F Troopers will be patrolling school zones and speeding will not be tolerated while the school zone speed limits are in effect. Most school zones have a reduced speed limit in effect from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm; however there are some zones that are marked with slightly different times. It is the responsibility of the motorist to be aware of these speed zones and to reduce their speed accordingly. In addition to the speed zones, the motoring public needs to be on the lookout for school busses that are loading or unloading children. If a school bus is stopped for this purpose and has its stop signs and red lights on, motorists must stop not less than thirty feet from the bus and wait for the lights to be turned off before proceeding. Never pass a school bus which is stopped to pick-up or drop-off a child. A school bus driver can report any violation of this law. The fines for this violation can be substantial and your driver's license may be suspended. Motorists traveling the roadways during peak school traffic periods should expect traffic congestion and possible delays near school zones. It is important for each driver to be patient with the increased traffic and allow extra time to arrive safely at their destination.
