Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release July 7, 2010 Unrestrained Calhoun Man Killed in Crash A Calhoun man died in a single-vehicle crash last night in Ouachita Parish.
Louisiana State Police - Troop F Troopers investigated the single-vehicle crash shortly after 8:30 pm on July 6, 2010. A 1999 Ford Explorer was traveling east on US Hwy 80, east of Britton Road, when, for unknown reasons, the driver lost control while on a downgrade. The vehicle crossed the centerline and entered the westbound ditch where it rolled-over several times. During the roll-over, the unrestrained driver, the sole occupant, was completely ejected. Troopers located the driver underneath his vehicle. The driver was identified as 22-year-old John Sims of Calhoun. Sims was pronounced dead on the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner’s Office.
Sims was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol/drug use is unknown and routine toxicology tests are pending.
According to the NHTSA, an ejected occupant is three (3) times more likely to be killed in a crash versus a properly restrained occupant who remains inside the vehicle. LSP would like to remind all occupants to please take a few seconds to buckle up. To date in 2010, Louisiana State Police Troop F- Troopers have investigated twenty-one (21) fatal crashes resulting in twenty-two (22) deaths. Contact Information, Lt.
