News Release August 12, 2009 Interstate Crash Leaves One Dead and Another with Serious injuries
A nineteen-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 20.
The crash occurred on August 11, 2009 at about 6:00 pm on Interstate 20 in Ouachita Parish. A 2002 Ford Taurus was traveling east on I-20 near milepost 119 when, for unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the vehicle and traveled through the median. The Ford then entered the westbound lanes of I-20 where it struck the rear tandem tires of an 18-wheeler.
The front seat passenger of the Ford, identified as 19-year-old Codye Mardis from Columbia, LA, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner's Office.
The driver of the Ford, identified as 17-year-old Kassey Mauldin from Columbia, was transported to St Francis hospital with critical injuries.
The driver of the "18 wheeler", a 2008 Peterbuilt with trailer, was identified as 46-year-old Stephen Kidd from Orlando, Fl. He was not injured in the crash.
It appears that both drivers and the occupant were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Alcohol use is not suspected, but routine toxicology tests are pending. No citations have been issued yet and the crash remains under investigation.
In 2009, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated twenty-eight (28) fatal crashes resulting in thirty-one (31) deaths. (updated 9-3) Contact Information,
