TROOP F NEWS RELEASE February 22, 2018 Unrestrained Bernice Man Dies in Union Parish Crash Farmerville -- An unrestrained man lost his life this morning after the vehicle he was driving traveled off the road and struck a tree. Shortly after 5:15 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 2 just west of Farmerville. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by 20-year-old Gilberto Zuniga Jr. of Bernice, was traveling east on LA Hwy 2 when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the road. After traveling off the road, the vehicle began to rotate and struck a large tree. Zuniga, who was not restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Union Parish Coroner’s Office. A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. In 2018, Troop F has investigated 7 fatal crash resulting in 9 death.
