TROOP F NEWS RELEASE Impairment Suspected in Bastrop Man’s Death Swartz – Early this morning, a single vehicle crash killed a man from Bastrop, LA. He was wearing a seat belt, but is suspected of being impaired. Troopers responded to the crash around 1:30 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 139, north of U.S. Hwy 80. The crash involved a 2008 Ford F-150, driven by Larry Cathey (W/M 68 yoa). The Ford was northbound on LA Hwy 139 when Cathey lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a large tree. Cathey was pronounced dead, at the scene, by the Ouachita Parish Coroner’s Office. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Motorists must be reminded that alcohol and other drugs have many effects on the body. Alcohol and other drugs can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and designate a sober driver. Not doing so can have deadly consequences. Louisiana State Police has zero tolerance for impaired drivers. To report aggressive/impaired driving, call *LSP (*577) from your cellular phone or your local law enforcement agency. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. In 2019, Troop F has investigated 10 fatal crashes resulting in 11 deaths. Contact Information: | |||
