TROOP F NEWS RELEASE Head-On Crash Kills Three People in Morehouse Parish Bastrop – On April 26, 2019 shortly before 6:00 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 3051. This crash took the life of three Morehouse Parish residents. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, driven by 37-year-old Jonathan Smith of Bastrop, was traveling north on LA Hwy 3051. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle crossed the center line into the southbound lane and collided with a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by 69-year-old James Tullos of Mer Rouge. After impact, the Monte Carlo traveled off the road and into a ditch where it became engulfed in flames. Smith, along with a passenger in the Monte Carlo whose name is being withheld pending positive identification, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Morehouse Parish Coroner’s Office. Tullos was also pronounced dead at the scene by the Coroner’s Office. A toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
