Pedestrian Killed in Ouachita Parish Crash

Monroe - Shortly before 8:15 p.m. on October 26, 2018, Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a crash on US Hwy 165 near Richwood Road #1 in south Monroe. The crash claimed the life of a pedestrian who was crossing US Hwy 165.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a pedestrian, 51-year-old Terry Sandifer of Monroe, was attempting to cross US Hwy 165. At the same time, 35-year-old Rtearia Harris of Bossier City was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado north on US Hwy 165. The vehicle directly in front of Harris took evasive action to miss the pedestrian walking in the roadway. Harris was unable to take action and struck Sandifer as he was in the northbound lanes of US Hwy 165.

Sandifer was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner’s Office. Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Pedestrians and motorists alike are urged to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night.

In 2018, Troop F has investigated 30 fatal crashes resulting in 34 deaths.
