TROOP F NEWS RELEASE May 15, 2021 Failure to Yield Results in Unrestrained Driver’s Death Monroe – On May 14, 2021, shortly after 6:30 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a multi-vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 594 at Powell Avenue. This crash claimed the life of 19-year-old Jathamas White of Monroe. The initial investigation revealed a 2004 Lincoln Navigator, driven by 25-year-old Jalayla Jackson of Monroe, was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 594 approaching the intersection with Powell Avenue. Jackson failed to yield at a red traffic signal at the intersection and collided with a 2018 Hyundai Elantra, driven by White. After the first collision, Jackson’s vehicle continued through the intersection and struck a Chevrolet Tahoe causing it to strike a Kia Telluride. White, who was unrestrained, was flown to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Two other passengers in the vehicle with White were also taken to a local hospital with injuries. Jackson was not injured in the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Buckling up is the most effective way to protect yourself during a vehicle crash. Failure to take a few seconds to buckle up can have devastating consequences. Louisiana law requires every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained day or night. | |||
