Unrestrained Baker Man Dies in Four Vehicle Crash in East Baton Rouge Parish

Baker, LA – Shortly after 5:00 pm on March 4, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a four vehicle fatality crash on LA 19 north of LA 423 (Thomas Rd.) in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 32 year old Michael Henderson of Baker, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Henderson was traveling southbound on LA 19 in a 2003 Ford Expedition. Henderson was traveling at a high rate of speed as he approached 26 year old Darius Washington’s 1985 Oldsmobile Delta. Henderson struck the rear of Washington’s vehicle causing Henderson to cross the center line into oncoming traffic. Henderson, now traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, sideswiped 37 year old Bertha Brown’s 2013 Infiniti G37 on the driver’s side. Henderson’s vehicle continued southbound in the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2015 International box truck driven by 43 year old Leonard Payne Jr. The impact with the box truck caused Henderson to be ejected from his vehicle.

Henderson was unrestrained and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. Brown and Payne sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center for treatment. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from all drivers for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
