Pedestrian Killed in West Carroll Parish Crash

Oak Grove – On January 29, 2015, at 5:49 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a crash that occurred on Louisiana Highway 17 just south of the Town of Oak Grove in West Carroll Parish.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 1998 Jeep Cherokee driven by 49-year-old Betty James of Lake Providence was traveling south on LA 17 when her vehicle struck a pedestrian who was walking in the middle of the southbound lane. After the crash, the Jeep Cherokee stopped and blocked the southbound lane of travel.

The pedestrian, 22-year-old David Smith of Greenbrier, Arkansas, was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Prior to first responders arriving on scene, a newer model maroon 4-door Ford F series pickup with gold fender flares traveling north on LA 17 swerved into the southbound lane to avoid another vehicle which was stopped on the shoulder. After crossing the center line the Ford pickup struck the pedestrian and continued north on LA 17 into Oak Grove.

Anyone with information pertaining to the suspect or suspect vehicle is asked to call Louisiana State Police Troop F at 318-345-0000 or West Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office at 318-428-2331. Callers will remain anonymous.

Walking upon the travel lanes of a highway, especially while dark, is dangerous and should be avoided. The highway shoulder is generally a safer location upon which to walk. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to walk facing traffic, wear light colored clothing, wear reflective materials, and to carry a flashlight at night.
