Unrestrained Juvenile Killed in Jackson Parish Fatal Crash

On November 21, 2014, at 11:51 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single vehicle crash on Country Rd. in Jackson Parish. This crash happened approximately 1/10 of a mile north of Louisiana Highway 4.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 15-year-old juvenile of Jonesboro, was traveling south on Country Rd around a slight right hand curve. For unknown reasons, the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The driver then attempted to regain control and crossed over both lanes of travel. The vehicle then exited the roadway to the right and struck a tree.

The driver and passenger, who were both unrestrained, had to be extricated. The passenger, a 14-year-old juvenile from Quitman, was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver was transported to a local hospital for serious injuries.

Impairment at this time is unknown. A Toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires drivers with a learner’s permit to be 15 years of age. With a learner’s permit, you may drive only while accompanied by a licensed adult at least 21 years old, or a sibling at least 18 years old who is also licensed. Drivers with a learner’s permit may not drive between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be restrained in all seating position, day and night. While every crash is not survivable, wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash.
